COLDS AND FLU
Colds are very common at this time of the year. Flu is similar and often has the same
symptoms but is usually more severe and lasts longer.
Typical symptoms are runny nose, sneezing, sinus congestion, cough and sore throat and
usually last 5-7 days but can sometimes continue longer.
These conditions are caused by viruses and do not respond to antibiotics. They can be
prevented by following simple measures such as avoiding close contact with those showing
symptoms, washing hands frequently and covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Treatment includes rest and drinking plenty of fluids and proprietary medication for symptom
relief available from the Pharmacist.

Everyone over 65 and those at high risk will have had the opportunity to have a flu jab in the
autumn. At the end of December we had administered nearly 1600 doses to our patients.
If you qualified for this free vaccination but did not have it and would like to consider
having it this year contact us in September for more information.
